Tommy Davidson is set to reprise his iconic role as Varnell Hill in a new BET+ series, nearly three decades after his memorable guest appearance on the classic sitcom Martin. The spinoff, titled Varnell Hill, has received a straight-to-series order and will consist of eight episodes. Co-created by Martin star Martin Lawrence and longtime collaborator Bentley Kyle Evans, the series offers a behind-the-scenes look at the fictional late-night talk show, The Varnell Hill Show. Davidson’s character, known for his flamboyant personality and catchphrase “Did you miss me?”, navigates the challenges of staying relevant in today’s ever-evolving media landscape. The show promises a blend of satire, humor, and innovative storytelling techniques, including cutaways and fourth-wall breaks. Evans, who previously served as executive producer and showrunner on Martin, will return in those roles for the spinoff, also taking on writing and directing duties. Lawrence will serve as an executive producer, with Jesse Collins also on board in that capacity. While it’s unclear whether Lawrence will reprise his role as Martin Payne, reports suggest he is expected to appear in multiple episodes. The series will introduce new characters and feature surprise celebrity cameos, offering a fresh take while honoring the legacy of the original show. Davidson expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the role, stating, “Did you miss me? Well, now you don’t have to! I’m excited and honored to be a part of such a creative project with the brilliant mind of Martin Lawrence, over 30 years in the … !” An official release date for Varnell Hill has yet to be announced.
